Internships are a great way to learn or apply skills, as well as a way to give back to the community.
Vecinos offers flexible, unpaid internships throughout the year and are willing to work with you to fulfill needed class credit or specific job experience. Depending on interests and qualifications, the internship is flexible in assignment and language requirements. Overall, interns must be willing to adapt and be flexible to situations and schedules, be friendly and welcoming, and be professional at all times.
Internships may include the following aspects, but are open to adaptation:
- Outreach: Attend nightly outreach with Vecinos staff to homes of farmworkers. Conduct program registration, health education, and some case management.
- Interpretation: Attend medical appointments with Vecinos patients and ensure proper and consistent medical attention and language interpretation.
- Office Accountability: Vecinos would be unable to function without a smoothly-running office, which includes data-input, filing, and hands-on projects.

Vecinos has partnered with different institutions to provide internships, including Western Carolina University (WCU). Through WCU’s numerous educational departments, students from different majors or areas of studies can find an internship with us. Some of the departments we collaborate with include Spanish, communications, nursing, nutrition, or other health related majors. North Carolina State Employees’ Credit Union (NCSECU) Public Fellows Internship program connects undergraduate students to meaningful summer internships in rural communities.
