Every year, as winter gives way to early spring, the journey of migrant farmworkers begins—an annual pilgrimage marked by determination, sacrifice, and hope.
At the heart of this journey lies an unbreakable bond between the farmworkers and our Outreach Team—a relationship built on trust, affection, and mutual respect.
Beginning in early February, our team starts receiving updates from the farmworkers as they make their way back to the fields of Western North Carolina. These messages come in many forms, each one a testament to the long-standing connection we’ve nurtured with those we serve:
“Today is the last day with my wife and children.”
“We’ve already left town.”
“We’re at the hotel in Monterrey.”
“Good morning—we’re at the association in Vass now.”
“Hello, we’ve arrived. We made it last night but were too tired to call. We’re here now, and already working…”
The arrival of the workers each season is more than just a logistical update—it’s a deeply human experience. For many, the journey is bittersweet. They leave behind their families and homes, carrying a heavy sense of longing. Yet, within that sadness is a spark of something new—an opportunity to work, to earn, and to build a better future for their loved ones.
For these workers, the seasonal rhythm is one of sacrifice and sowing—but also of hope and the promise of a fruitful harvest. The work is grueling, the days are long, but the rewards are tangible: income to sustain their families and the dream of a better life back home.
Our Outreach Team plays a crucial role in easing this transition. We are here to welcome the workers not just with open arms, but with deep understanding. Through consistent communication—even before they arrive—we anticipate their needs and offer support, whether that’s a listening ear, a ride, or simply someone who knows their name.
These relationships, built over years of trust and ongoing connection, are what make this work meaningful. The workers know they can reach out to us at any time, and we know their arrival marks a fresh start—one we’re honored to witness and support.
As farmworkers return to our region, we’re reminded of the power of community, the strength of trust, and the beauty of solidarity.
Together, we look forward to another season of hard work, shared challenges, and, ultimately, shared success.
We are ready. Let’s get to work!
